What is Kiev.cd?
CD stands for City Digest / Cultural Diary. We document Kyiv as locals see it: layered, resilient, creative. No clichés — only streets, people, tastes and sounds. From Kyivan Rus to 2026 startup capital.
Kyiv is older than Moscow, Vienna and Berlin. And younger than your playlist.
Founded by brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and sister Lybid, Kyiv was capital of Kyivan Rus — the largest medieval state in Europe. It survived Mongols, empires, wars and reboots to become a green, hilly metropolis on the Dnipro with 400+ parks, 100+ museums and one of the deepest metro systems in the world.
Why .cd? Historically .cd is Congo’s domain, but we reclaim it as City Digest — a compact disc of urban memory. Every week we press new tracks: history deep-dives, district walks, interviews with chefs, artists, architects and volunteers.
We write in English to connect Kyiv with the world — travelers, researchers, Ukrainians abroad, and anyone who types “Kiev” with love and curiosity. Local names: Kyiv (Ukrainian), Kiev (international classic) — same soul.
Ten districts, one pulse
From merchant Podil to governmental Pechersk, from hipster Podil to brutalist Troyeshchyna — pick your Kyiv. All reachable by metro, funicular, tram and your feet.

Podil

Khreshchatyk & Maidan
Main street, Independence Square, Globus mall, parades, chestnut blossom in May.

Pechersk
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Motherland Monument, Mariinsky Park, government quarter.

Obolon & Dnipro
Embankment, Natalka Park, wakeboarding, sunset picnics, Hydropark beaches.

Shuliavka & Lukianivka
Street art, Closer club, Dovzhenko Centre, KPI campus, vintage markets.

Holosiievo & Vydubychi
Holosiivsky forest, Vydubychi Monastery, Expocenter, pyrogovo open-air museum.
From 482 AD to 2026
Kyiv has been capital for 15 centuries. Short version — to impress at dinner.
Legend of Kyi
Three brothers and sister Lybid build a town on seven hills above Dnipro. Trade route “from Varangians to Greeks” begins.
Volodymyr the Great
Mass baptism in Dnipro. St Sophia (1037) and Pechersk Lavra (1051) become spiritual beacons of Eastern Europe.
Fall and rebirth
Batu Khan destroys Kyiv. City shrinks to 200 houses but survives as myth and pilgrimage site.
Khreshchatyk boom
Sugar barons build opera, Bessarabka, funicular (1905), first tram in Russian Empire (1892).
Resilience
WWII destroys Khreshchatyk. Post-war Stalinist ensemble rebuilt. Arsenalna metro (1960) goes 105m deep.
Capital again
Blue-yellow flag over Maidan. Orange Revolution (2004), Revolution of Dignity (2014) shape modern civic Kyiv.
Fortress & startup hub
Kyiv holds, rebuilds, hosts IT, film festivals, charity raves. 2026: most resilient city-break in Europe.

Arsenalna is 2nd deepest station in the world
105.5 meters. Two escalators, 5 minutes ride. Built as Cold War shelter. Locals read books while descending.

Golden Gate — 1037 replica
Main entrance to medieval Kyiv. Yaroslav the Wise built it to rival Constantinople. Reconstructed in 1982.
Borscht, techno & Baroque
Ukrainian Baroque, Soviet mosaics, murals, charity raves, 200+ coffee shops on Podil alone. And food that hugs you.

Borscht
Beet soup with smetana, pampushky with garlic. UNESCO heritage since 2022. Best on Bessarabka.

Varenyky
Potato, cherry, cottage cheese. Eat with sour cream. Try at Puzata Hata or Kanapa.

Chicken Kyiv
Invented here: crispy cutlet with melting butter. Cut carefully — it squirts joy.

Third-wave coffee
Kyiv roasts world-class. Flat white on Reitarska, filter on Andriivsky.
Murals & mosaics hunt
110+ murals since 2014. Mosaic bus stops, Soviet modernism at Expocenter, PinchukArtCentre free entry. Route: Maidan → Reitarska → Podil → UNIT.City.
